As summer commenced, water temperatures climbed into the mid-80s, prompting a surge in inshore fishing activity around Anna Maria Island. Anglers found snook congregating along mangrove shorelines and oyster bars, with live shiners and pinfish proving particularly effective. The redfish bite was steady, especially during early morning hours, with topwater plugs enticing aggressive strikes.
Offshore, the presence of hatch bait signaled the start of the mangrove snapper season. Fishermen targeting reefs and wrecks reported success using light fluorocarbon leaders and small hooks to present live shiners, resulting in impressive hauls of these tasty fish.
Best Bait: Live shiners and pinfish for inshore species; small live shiners for mangrove snapper offshore.
Hot Spots: Mangrove shorelines around Terra Ceia Bay for snook; nearshore reefs for mangrove snapper.
